Tehran's heritage district encompasses 2,250 hectares

Tehran, IRNA - The Management of District Affairs Studies of Tehran Municipality has announced that districts 11 and 12 of the city, expanding over 2,250 hectares, are considered as the historical areas of the capital.

Abolfath Shadmehri, director-general of the district affairs of Tehran Municipality, told IRNA on Tuesday that the largest heritage district in Tehran is Nasseri fence, which is limited to four squares of Enghelab, Kargar, Shoush and 17 Shahrivar.
A comprehensive document has been prepared for the heritage district, but it is not clear what efforts should be done by which administrative entities to preserve the area, he warned.
The official went on to say that apart from the Nasseri fence there are some historical monuments and regions in Rey, district 1 and district 2 of the capital city, which require special attention to be paid to.
Some 300 registered monuments and 2,300 buildings worth of historical importance have been identified, Shadmehri noted.
He further said that the Tehran Municipality set up a strategic council with the presence of specialists in order to program for the preservation and renovation of the historical and dilapidated buildings.
The Nasseri fence surrounded the old city of Tehran during the reign of King Mohammad Shah of the Qajar dynasty. The area was created to include more population in an enclosed area.
The director-general also said that the municipality management has attempted to preserve the historical identity of the city and help resolve problems in heritage districts.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has so far inscribed some monuments such as Golestan Palace, located in Tehran, on its World Heritage List.
The UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office (UTCO) was established in January 2003.  The Office covers the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Turkmenistan.
